Because motherhood will never be a perfect science

on February 20, 2012

When your babies are sick or in pain, a feeling of helplessness can overwhelm you. You want to make them feel better and take away the hurt, but that’s not always possible. When you are unsure of what ails them, your imagination can play terrible tricks on you, and you will sit there and suffer silently as you conjure up all types of illnesses. Until the doctor can tell you what the problem really is. Is it any wonder that our hair seems to turn gray as soon as we have children?

Thank goodness for hair dye!

Diva girl has been having stomach pains and some other symptoms that prompted a visit to the paediatrician. But before that, I worried about all the things that stomach issues could mean. It turns out that she may just be constipated. She still has to get a tummy x-ray done to be sure, but the doctor feels pretty confident that it’s nothing serious and I’m am almost relieved…obviously waiting for 100% confirmation. I am a mother after all!  When it comes to our kids, we never take anything for granted.

So until we know for sure, it’s my job to ensure that she’s getting enough fruit, veggies, fibre and water. All things that I thought she was getting enough of. So then, as a mother I beat myself up for not being on top of her food intake…because of course, it’s all my fault! The next day, I do a massive shopping trip and buy even more fruits and vegetables than we normally buy, which is already quite a bit. I inundate the poor kid with very healthy eating and wait for her system to do its thing. (Hmmm… she’s probably going to be really embarrassed by this one day. Huh?) Okay, so let’s just say ‘all systems are a go’ … kind of! But as it is with most pre-schoolers, when they don’t feel well, eating is the last thing they want to do. Especially the healthy stuff! Sigh…

While we wait for results, I can satisfy myself with the knowledge that Baby girl has no problem in the ‘poo’ dept. She can fill that diaper without a moment’s hesitation!  Actually, I think I smell something….
