What A Difference

on May 5, 2013

Diva girl just had her 6th birthday last month and now Baby girl will be turning 3 in June.

Where does the time go?

I asked her what kind of party she would like and the answer was a ‘Princess Party!’

No surprise there…Baby girl is really a girlie-girl. Pink is her favorite color and she likes to play dress up with her dollies and wear her blue sparkly shoes. Just picture Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz deciding that the red really wasn’t her color and you have my Baby girl.

What is so amazing to watch is just how different Baby girl is from her sister in her likes and dislikes. Even though she makes every effort to copy her, Baby girl definitely has her own preferences.

Diva girl is in the tomboy stage. All of her ‘best’ friends at school are boys and they’ve been friends since daycare. So she wears her hat backwards (when I can’t be bothered to argue about it) and she hates pink, but she loves purple (sorry, only DARK purple). She has boycotted ‘Hello Kitty!’ and she would rather wear jeans at the height of summer before she’d put on a dress. Oh…the trials we are starting to have since everyone including myself always buys her dresses. Who doesn’t want to see a little girl in a dress?

But I am learning to work with her personality, since my mother very kindly reminded me that I went through this phase too; and let’s be honest…I really am not a big fan of most things pink! My favorite color is purple and I love my jeans!!! So I don’t buy the frilly dresses, I buy the t-shirt dresses with funky sayings on them and things that will work if she wants to wear her jeans underneath.

…and we still fight! Oh, and please don’t tell her she looks cute or pretty! Ugh! Any word that is closely associated with ‘cool’ is fine. Thank you very much!

But my Baby girl is all about twirling dresses and pretty shoes; a purse over her tiny shoulder and all of Mommy’s bangles on one hand…until they all fall off. For Easter, I put colorful little stretchy bracelets in some of the eggs, so now she wears them for dress up time.

…and they still fall off! What can I say, she is a tiny little bundle of cuteness!

But as cute as she is, when she gets into one of her wardrobe tantrums…it’s every Mom for herself!!!

Why can’t she wear her sparkly shoes in the middle of March? Why can’t she bring ALL of her dollies to daycare? Why can’t she wear her jelly sandals in the middle of winter? A ‘twirly’ blue sundress (her favorite) is nowhere to be found…why can’t you find it Mommy? Well, that’s because it’s in the laundry after you spilled spaghetti sauce on it at dinner…

If the answer doesn’t suit her…well, let’s just say it makes for a very interesting morning.
